Chimney Sweep in Spokane, Washington
A chimney that has not been swept in a few seasons will usually tell you. The fire is slow to draw, the room smells of smoke when the fireplace is cold, and there is black flaking on the damper.

When you actually need a sweep, and when you do not
You need one if you burn wood regularly and have not had it done this year, if you can see flaking or buildup on the damper or the first few feet of flue, if the draft has got worse, or if there is a smoky smell when the fireplace is cold and the damper is shut.
You probably do not need one if you burned three or four times last winter and the flue was swept recently, or if you only have a gas fireplace. Gas burns clean. What a gas unit needs is the venting checked, not brushing.
That is worth saying plainly because the usual pitch in this trade is an annual sweep for everyone. If you burn rarely, an annual inspection with a sweep every second or third year is the honest answer.
How the job is done
We lay down sheeting at the hearth and seal the opening, then run a HEPA vacuum at the fireplace for the whole job so the soot goes into the machine instead of your carpet.
The flue gets brushed from the top down or the bottom up depending on access, usually with rotary rods for a lined flue and a poly or wire brush sized to the flue. We clear the smoke shelf and the damper, which is where buildup actually collects and where most of the draft problems start.
Then a Level 1 look at the parts we can reach, and we tell you what we found. If something needs fixing you get it in writing with a price, not a scare.
What a sweep costs in Spokane
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Open fireplace, swept annually | $130 to $380 |
| Wood stove or insert | $150 to $400 |
| Heavy creosote, several seasons of buildup | $300 to $1,000 |
| Second flue on the same visit | Usually discounted |
Typical Spokane-area ranges, not a quote. What moves the price: how many seasons since the last sweep, whether it is a straight flue or an offset, roof pitch and access, and whether it is an open fireplace or an insert that has to come out.

What to expect on the day
Allow an hour to ninety minutes for a single flue. Do not burn for at least 24 hours beforehand, the flue needs to be cold. Clear the hearth and move rugs back a few feet.
It is less messy than people expect. The vacuum runs the whole time and the sheeting catches the rest. There is noise from the vacuum and some scraping from the rods.
We take the debris away with us.
Questions people ask
How much does a chimney sweep cost in Spokane?
Most single-flue open fireplaces land between $130 and $380. Heavy buildup after several unswept seasons can run to $1,000 because it is a different job, not the same job done slower.
When should I book?
Late summer and early autumn. Everyone in Spokane calls in October when it turns cold, and that is when the wait is longest. August and September you can usually get booked within days.
Does burning a creosote log mean I can skip the sweep?
No. Those logs can make some deposits easier to remove but they do not remove them. The material still has to come out of the flue, and glazed creosote needs mechanical work regardless.
Can I sweep it myself?
For a straight, accessible flue with light buildup, people do. What you will not get is the camera check and the Level 1 look at the parts you cannot see, which is where the problems that matter actually live.
